Dr. Karen Finkelstein
Focused and determined, she has made it her personal cause to do whatever it takes to fight cancer.
Dr. Karen Finkelstein, leader of the medical team at Southwest Women’s Oncology, specializes in the latest treatments for gynecologic cancers. The goal of her practice is to offer the best possible outcomes, while treating each patient with personalized care in a healing environment built around compassion and respect.
Double-board certified in OB/GYN and GYN/ONC by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Finkelstein is the first women’s specialist in New Mexico to be recognized with Master Surgeon accreditation in both Robotic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Gynecology.
She is the Medical Co-Director of the Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) program at Lovelace Women’s Hospital, which is also designated as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery (COERS).
As an executive board member of the New Mexico Care Alliance, Dr. Finkelstein actively supports clinical research, providing her patients with access to the newest, most promising clinical trials. A passionate promoter of early detection, she founded the Cancer’s Worst Enemy initiative. This unique program champions, educates, and empowers women in their journey from early diagnosis to conquering cancer. She is also an expert adviser to United to Cure Cancer’s STAMP (Support, Training & Assistance for Medical Providers) program. This program helps referring providers get the information they need in order to offer the best options to patients facing potential gynecologic cancer diagnoses.
“Every day, I meet patients and start a journey with each one in their fight against gynecologic cancers and complicated gynecologic diagnoses. In this role, I have the honor to help drive and support each patient’s fight. I serve as an educator, master surgeon in minimally invasive gynecologic and robotic surgery, and advocate for advanced care and access to state-of-the-art treatments and trials. In turn, my relationship with each patient influences me and reinforces my commitment to empowering women in their fight against medical obstacles with success, determination, unwavering support, and expertise.”
Gynecologic Cancer Expertise
A licensed medical physician in gynecological oncology in New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, and Georgia, Dr. Finkelstein joined Southwest Gynecologic Associates Inc. in New Mexico in 2006
From 2004 and 2006, she was an Associate Professor at Emory University School of Medicine, Division of Gynecologic Oncology.
Having earned her Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at UNC – Chapel Hill, Dr. Finkelstein completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
Additional educational accomplishments include: Magna Cum Laude State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn; a Masters in Biochemical Nutrition from Columbia University in New York; and a Bachelor’s degree in English from Duke University.
